His research interests include the modern economic history of China, the economics of development and environmental economics. In recent years he has focused on contemporary social development problems in China, including poverty reduction and the growth of income inequality. Besides his academic work, Professor Riskin has consulted for the United Nations Development Programme in China and elsewhere.

As Academic Advisor for Year of China 2010-2011, Professor Riskin created a number of in-depth programs on topics that are important to China and the world.  For Year of India 2012-2013, he hosted Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen for his lecture on Social Demands of Justice.
